What Fullerton College is doing

The team at Fullerton College is busy working to move Guided Pathways goals forward. Here’s what we’re doing right now to accomplish each of the Four Pillars.

Starfish

To further Pillars 3, Fullerton College launched Starfish. This effort including the following achievements:

  • The Promise Program uses Starfish to support their cohort of over 2,500 students including Success Plans and the scheduling of appointments with student service classified staff and hourly workers.
  • The Hornets Tutoring Program uses Starfish to record attendance at embedded tutoring sessions.
  • Faculty have been asked to use Starfish to communicate with their students and to connect them with student support services on campus. This includes the use of Alerts, Referrals, and KUDOS developed by our implementation team.
  • The Implementation Team is working with several student support programs to onboard them to Starfish so that they can
connect and engage with their cohorts. Those groups include FYE, Re-entry Students, Umoja, Grads to Be, LGBTQIA2S+, Cadena, Teacher Prep Program, and the Administrative Justice Prep Program.
  • The Implementation Team is working with the SLOA Committee and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to use Starfish
as one tool for assessing Program Student Learning Outcomes.
  • The Implementation Team is working to onboard Department Coordinators in Starfish so that they can connect and engage with their majors.
  • The Implementation Team is working with the Dean of Enrollment Services and A&R to develop campus guidelines for real time
gradebook and attendance roster data in Starfish. The team is also working to onboard faculty so that once approved we can turn on faculty gradebook and attendance rosters from CANVAS for those that have opted in.
  • The Guided Pathways Office created a campus document summarizing our Starfish referrals and attributes.

Program Mapper

To advance Pillars 1 & 2, Fullerton College launched the Program Mapper. Following are the achievements to forward that effort:

  • The Guided Pathways Office is facilitating the final approval and publication of the outstanding sixty maps.
  • The Guided Pathways Office and PMAT are developing guidelines for mapping Milestone Tiles in Program Mapper.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is collaborating with CSUF on the creation of 2 + 2 maps. These maps will visualize the completion of both the ADT and the BA/BS degrees.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is collaborating with NOCE to connect NOCE programs with credit programs at Fullerton College. We want students at NOCE to see a clear path to Fullerton College once they are done with their program at NOCE.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is collaborating with Outreach to introduce Hornet Pathways to incoming students.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is collaborating with the district catalog coordinator, the campus curriculum specialist, and A&R to ensure that all systems are kept updated on curriculum and program changes.

Real-Time Degree Audit

To advance Pillar 3, Fullerton College created the Real-Time Degree Audit. The following are the achievements

  • A&R has started evaluating other college transcripts of currently enrolled students.
  • For students that are using ONLY Fullerton College units to meet program requirements, Degree Works SHOULD be accurate as of the start of spring 2023. Spoiler: It still isn’t perfect.

New Class Schedule/Registration

To advance Pillar 3, Fullerton College created the Guided Exit program.

  • A&R has started evaluating other college transcripts of currently enrolled students.

Zero Cost Textbook & Low Cost Textbook courses/programs

To move forward Pillars 3, Fullerton College created a new class schedule and registration calendar. This included the following landmarks:

  • The Guided Pathways Office is currently overseeing two ZTC grants with the state. They are designed to bring at least one ZTC program (degree or certificate) to Fullerton College. The Guided Pathways Office is currently taking RFPs for both ZTC grants.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is collaborating with division administrative assistants, deans, department coordinators, and the bookstore to develop a new workflow for textbook adoption process to allow for proper Banner coding for ZTC and LTC courses.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is collaborating with A&R and our MIS team to update Banner to allow coding for all XB12 variables related to instructional material costs.

FYE

To advance Pillar 2 and 3, Fullerton College created the FYE option. Here are the accomplishments we made to advance that.

  • The first FYE event for new students beginning in the spring of 2023 occurred in January 2023, serving almost 130 students.
  • The FYE team in collaboration with the Guided Pathways Office developed a Community of Practice between Math, English and Communication Studies faculty. The intent is for this community of practice to develop ways to build FYE engagements into Math, English, and Communication Studies courses.
  • The FYE team in collaboration with the Guided Pathways Office and the Office of Campus Communications is working to develop Badgr to help gamify the FYE experience for students.
  • The FYE team in collaboration with the Guided Pathways Office and the Institutional Integrity Committee are working to develop an inventory of student engagements to add to the gamification of the FYE experience.

  • The Guided Exit team created a workplan to spend the allocation in the Enrollment and Re-engagement Project from fall 2022.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is piloting a peer coach program with Hornet’s Tutoring as part of the ongoing development of the Student Success Network in Starfish.
  • The Guided Pathways Office is continuing to develop the visualization of the Student Success Network in Starfish.

Student Drop Survey

To advance Pillars 3, Fullerton College created the FYE option. This included the following milestones:

Student Data/Surveys

To advance Pillar 4, Fullerton College created the Student Data/Surveys.

  • Guided Pathways facilitated the campus participation in the SENSE survey during the fall of 2022. We are collaborating with OIE to develop a readout of the results for the campus.
  • Guided Pathways in collaboration with Counseling and the OIE facilitated a campus wide survey on the student experience in and with Counseling classes and services in the fall of 2022. We are collaborating with OIE to develop a readout of the results for the campus.
  • The Guided Pathways Office has begun collaborating with the OIE on scheduling a second survey inquiry group.

Campus Collaboration Group

To advance Pillars 4, Fullerton College created the Campus Collaboration Group. This included the following milestones:

  • The CCG meets regularly on a monthly basis.

Guided Exit

To advance Pillar 3, Fullerton College created the Guided Exit program.

  • Guided Pathways office is collaborating with the directors of Admissions and Records and Transfer as well as the Counseling Division to support existing initiatives and the development of new initiatives to help students transition from the First Year Experience (FYE) to a guided exit or 2nd/3rd year experience program
  • Counseling and A&R are working on a pilot to target students that have applied for graduation but were denied. The project is designed to contact students to help them navigate their final steps to get through the gate of completion, transfer, and/or job placement. This pilot will be a part of the total Guided Exit plan.

Braiding with Student Equity and Achievement

To advance Pillars 4, Fullerton College created Braiding with Student Equity and Achievement. This included the following milestones:

  • The Guided Pathways Office continues to collaborate with the SEA committee. As part of our formal “assurances” to the CCCCO, the Guided Pathways plan had to acknowledge that intentional “braiding” is happening between Guided Pathways and Student Equity and Achievement. We continue to work on how to operationalize this “braiding” on our campus.
  • The Guided Pathways team uses a equity lens as we implement Starfish across campus.
